There was a time when these cries echoed through the night sky over Victoria Harbour. That year, millions of Hong Kongers took to the streets, using their own bodies to build a wall of resistance against authoritarian power. What they asked for was nothing more than the democracy, freedom, and dignity that should have belonged to them in the first place.
Yet the Chinese Communist Party’s promise that Hong Kong would remain unchanged for fifty years has long since become a lie. The rule of law that Hong Kong once took pride in has been eroded, press freedom has been strangled, and a highly free international city has been turned, under Beijing’s political pressure, into a fallen city where people live in fear.
What authoritarian regimes are best at is erasing history. What we must do is refuse to forget.
We are holding this seventh-anniversary commemoration for the young people who were arrested, for those forced into exile, and for every heart that once burned for freedom. We want the world to know that there was once such a group of people who paid such a heavy price for freedom.
Today, the CCP’s destruction of Hong Kong’s remaining democratic institutions continues. Silence only allows darkness to swallow more light. Commemoration is not only about the past; it is also about the present and the future.
We stand up to tell the high walls of tyranny: the spark has not gone out, and the people’s will lives on.
We sincerely invite everyone who longs for freedom to join us in this commemoration. With our resistance, let us call for the dawn of freedom. With our voices, let us tear through the long night and keep the flame of freedom alive.
Dress Code Suggestion: To commemorate Hong Kong’s Anti-Extradition Movement, participants are encouraged to wear black. Black clothing was an important symbol of Hong Kong citizens’ struggle for freedom and democracy. Let us use this shared color to remember that chapter of history.
